PAIN IN THE NECK

More young women than ever suffering from back pain thanks to oversized designer handbags

High heels, lumpy mattresses and household chores have also been blamed for the rise of spine problems in young women

THE fashion for oversized designer handbags has caused a steep rise in neck and back pain among young women.

Experts claim 67 per cent of those with problems started suffering before they are 30.

The toll is up by more than half, from 43 per cent a year earlier.

The main culprit is heavy fashionable bags stuffed to the brim.

Other causes are high heels, lumpy mattresses and repetitive household chores such as hoovering.

Around two-thirds of women have suffered with back problems at some point in their lives.

The average age they first get a dodgy spine is now just 28 compared with 32 for blokes.

One in six women first felt pain after lugging too much around in an oversized bag, research by the British Chiropractic Association found.

It warned many bags can weigh up to 7lb even before items are added. A spokesman said: ?쏬arge handbags are popular among young women. But they can pose a risk to posture.

?쏱otentially they can contribute to back problems.??/p>

The BCA?셲 Rishi Loatey added: ?쏧 always ask patients if they need to carry everything in their bags.

They say ?쁸es??every time. Women are carrying handbags for a long period of time and they do not spread the weight across the body the way rucksacks do.??/p>
